Best clam chowder I've had in Florida, & I'm using chowder from the docks of the south Jersey Shore as benchmark. Terrific light breading in onion rings. Fried fish - Haddock - was perfect. Light, not too heavy, crisp breading. Fried shrimp - excellent. Service - informative, knowledgeable, attentive, friendly. We've found our go to seafood spot. Anxious to try soft shell sandwich and their different varieties of po boys - oyster, shrimp, clams. Highly recommend it.

When looking for a place to have lunch in an unfamiliar area like most I turn to yelp to offer up some suggestions, naturally we always look for that four or five star experience and this was no exception. Whales Tales Fish House is located in a unsuspecting strip mall with little advertisement visible from the highway apparently it relies on its local popularity amongst its clientele to fill the tables and for good reason. This cozy little restaurant is putting out some of the best New England Seafood I've eaten in this part of Florida. The menu is simply and the quality of the seafood is outstanding prepared in a way that only this method of cooking can provide so don't confuse it with the normal offerings served up by most seafood restaurants famous throughout most of Florida. The open seating arrangement is simply and allows you to chose a booth or table to suit your parties needs. On this particular day Danielle was the acting hostess as well as the server for the entire restaurant not only was she extremely friendly and accommodating she was very efficient and offered up great tips during the ordering process you can pretty much mix and match anything on the menu and not have to worry about all the extra charges you often see at other places. I had the fried shrimp and fried oyster combination basket with coleslaw and homemade onion rings. Everything is cooked to order and served hot with a choice of seafood sauces but honestly the freshness and lightly seasoned batter doesn't require much of anything so if you've never had fresh New England Seafood and looking for a fast and delicious option for lunch or dinner look no further you won't be disappointed.

We tried the crab soup....light, flavorful and delicious. The clams and shrimp..fresh and very well prepared. Key Lime pie.... The BEST that we have ever tasted! Don't miss this place.... You won't be disappointed!

After spending the day at Mount Dora's Spring Collectibles and Crafts Show, my husband and I decided to venture further away from the crowds to grab a late lunch before heading back to Orlando. I used my trusty Yelp app and found Whale's Tale Fish House. The reviews sounded promising and it was a couple of miles away from the crowds and parking ordeals of downtown. Location: Finding the location was a breeze. We simply went West on 5th Avenue, along the northern shore of Lake Dora, until we came upon the strip mall location on our left. The restaurant is in a run-down strip mall - a couple doors down from Family Dollar. The locale leaves a bit more to be desired, but don't let that discourage you from parking and heading inside. Atmosphere: The dining room is small to medium in size - tables for 2 to 8 up front and booths for 4 along the wall, all the way to the back. The tables and booths are a bit dated - but there is nothing wrong with that. The decor is minimal but The restaurant was very clean and welcoming. After we walked inside we were asked to pick a seat. This may not be the way guests are seated during busier times. Service: The staff was very friendly and welcoming. They were quick with taking our drink and appetizer orders, our meal orders, as well as refilling our drinks. During downtime the staff were cleaning and tasking rather than socializing or playing on their phones. Food: The food was outstanding. Everything was fresh and light - even though most things were fried. We ordered a medium order of their Homemade Sweet Onion Rings. Tender sweet onion rings were deliciously fried in a light breading. They came with their house sauce which was a lot like a typical onion ring sauce but better. The onion rings did not leave us feeling weighed-down and remorseful like some fried appetizers do. My husband ordered the combo basket of fried clam strips and fried catfish. The clams were perfectly cooked - tender and slightly chewy (in a well-prepared clam way, not an overcooked way). The catfish was also very fresh - a light, crunchy breading (not the typical cornmeal breading) and delicate juicy flesh. He received a large handful of clams and two small catfish fillets. I ordered a combo basket of clam strips and fried shrimp. The shrimp were large, butterflied, and fried in a light breading - cooked perfectly tender, as shrimp should always be. And we all know how I felt about the fried clams. I received 6 large shrimp and a large handful of clams. Both baskets were overflowing with fries, hushpuppies, onion rings, and coleslaw to compliment our meal. The homemade coleslaw was fresh and tasty. The fries were crisp and yummy. The hushpuppies were crunchy and flavorful but a bit dense and dry, in my opinion. Price: The price was very good compared to a lot of seafood restaurants. The drinks were $1.99, the onion rings were $4.99, and each of the baskets were $11.99. In my experience, a basket of food that size at a typical seafood restaurant on or near a beach would range between $15.99 and $19.99, although the freshness, service, and quality may not compare to what we experienced at Whale's Tale Fish House. Overall: 5 Stars! Our experience at Whale's Tale Fish House was over and above what we expected. We cannot wait to return and try out some of their other dishes!

So Delish!!! Found this little gem on yelp. I ordered the broiled lemon butter shrimp basket with grits and onion rings. The shrimp was excellent, fresh tasting and cooked to perfection. The onion rings were also great, lightly breaded. My husband had a catfish sub which wasn't on the menu but they very graciously agreed to make one. It came with two hush puppies and boiled red potatoes. I took a bite and it was also excellent. He was very happy with it. Will definitely try to get here again!

I've heard so many good things about this place from my client's. So I called today to do a phone order for pick-up. But, the lady who picked up the phone proceeds to tell me that they are TOO BUSY to take my phone order and that I would have to call back. I'm a little confused... taking an order on the phone takes a couple of minutes. She could've asked me to hold. Instead she basically is saying that they are too busy for my money. That left a bad taste in my mouth and I won't be ordering. So, I can't comment on food. But, I can comment on their customer service and it's HORRIBLE!!!

New England seafood done right. The staff was warm and welcoming. Our server took excellent care of us during our visit. She made great recommendations and did not fail. The food was plentiful and done exactly the way it should have been for seafood. Overall this is a great place to eat and we will definitely return. I really don't have a ton to say other than our meals were fantastic. Enough said!

I'm a big stickler when comes to being authentic, I've been to Maryland before and had their sea food. The whales tale showcases nothing but the best Maryland style seafood I've had outside of the state. The food is super fresh and you can certainly tell the quality of the food as well as a lot of it is shipped from Maryland.

One of the first things I do when I move to a new town is search for good seafood and fish. OK, I'm done. Great crab cakes, fried cheese grits, fresh sweet onion rings and hush puppies. But the star of the show was the fried oysters. I don't know what kind of voodoo goes on in that kitchen but everything was cooked PERFECTLY! Big portions, good sweet tea... what's not to like? I think I've found my place. Oh, but use your GPS...it's easy to miss.

Located in strip mall, but plenty of parking! About 2 miles from center of Mt Dora. Signage small, look closely. Great lunch. We would go back. Everything tasted FRESH! Wow.

Well prepared down-home seafood, authentic maryland crabcakes, lightly-battered shrimp, totally unpretentious. Friendly efficient service. a good place that has fortunately made it through the five-year hope-it-succeeds period. love this place!

We really liked this place. It is a very casual husband and wife owned place. You get wine glasses, silverware and the plastic cups for coleslaw and pasta salad, etc. Everything is homemade, including the NE clam chowda'. Wine and beer are available. Wish we found this place earlier. It is in an odd part of Mount Dora but very easy to get to. Would have loved to try their home made crab cakes. The Caesar salad and the fried shrimp basket were very good.

Can't go wrong here if you are looking for fresh cooked fish and clams. Side salads are a bit small and ask for the hush puppies to be fried fresh they are so good

If you are looking for a traditional New England style place to enjoy some fish and cold beer, then search no further. This was our first time visiting Whales Tale and everyone in our party of six was pleasantly surprised with the food. The fried selections where not greasy and had a nice light batter that did not overshadow the taste of the food. The crab balls are just like eating freshly cracked crab steamed with Old Bay. The onion rings were very good, again not greasy or heavily coated. The belly clams were fresh as was the fish and chips and other items we ordered. The chowder was good, but if you are a fan of a thick New England, this one is a bit thin. The taste was very good and the clams tender and sweet. The crab soup could have used a bit more flavor and some salt to bring out the crab flavor. The beer was cold and the staff attentive. The overall restaurant was very clean and decorated in a typical New England coastal style. We all said we would return and enjoyed our meals and time there.

We made our first visit to Whales Tale for an early lunch. We had the fried basket duo of clams and oysters and a lunch special basket of haddock. They were fried to a perfection. Very lightly battered, fried in canola oil to a very light golden brown. Fresh, hot and very tasty. The place is very clean and the staff friendly. We will go back. Highly recommended.

The french onion soup is a meal itself & tasty with the homemade onion rings on top. The hush puppies were a bit undercooked for my liking. The fried oysters were tasty but slightly soggy on the inside. The slaw is creamy and delish. Overall, 4/5.
